SPRING SPORTS NOTES: Staley baseball, Liberty soccer, Smithville golf

You won’t find Staley High School baseball coach David Wilson complaining about the Falcons’ early success.No way, no how, not when his kids kick off the season by going 5-0 and winning the KC Metro Leadoff Tournament in Lee’s Summit last week golf practice net.Three years ago, the first year we were in this tournament, I don’t think we won a game,” said Wilson, reflecting on the Falcons’ 17-6 record last season. “We’ve worked very hard to get to this point, to be able to compete with the top teams in KC.”It was indeed a strong performance for the Falcons, who won the tournament by defeating Rockhurst, Park Hill, Lee’s Summit North, Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit West.And the best thing about it all, Wilson says, is that it was a team effort.We had a lot of guys step up in different ways,” he said.Standouts include Brian Young, who pitched a complete game shutout in the championship game. Center fielder Jackson Long collected three hits against Lee’s Summit North, and right fielder Isaac Geisinger had two hits each in the championship and semifinal games. Also, catcher Mikey Yeager, whom Wilson called “outstanding” behind the plate, had three hits against Rockhurst Learn Tiger Woods’ Swing form Golf Magazine.
